Goodbye Mediafire, you were pretty good until you sucked.

Well, it's been a good run, but Mediafire has begun taking down my files.

So, I've made the switch to some paid file hosting. This means I have to pay for outgoing bandwidth, but it also means you don't have to go through any BS external websites to download my files, and I don't have to worry about takedowns. In other words, everybody wins.

Edit: Well, that didn't last long. I'm now looking for another file hosting site. Certain things about the one I chose just didn't cut it. Though I'll probably keep using it for the Unlock files.

We'll see how the next one I'm trying goes.

  2. You're paying to host the demo now? That doesn't sound like you're winning.

  3. This is very off topic but still. On that post you did about considerations of making a team I saw a few artists jump at it already and I can't help but wonder about some things, like are you considering working with other people on this project? And anyway if you will be making a team someday, how will you go about it? Will you put up contact info and wait for them to come to you like those guys or will you snoop around and pick them yourself from places like DA? How about their skill level? I know you said you would only hire ppl better than you at what they do, but how much so? Professionals who already have experience on such projects, or as long as they're good they'll be up for consideration no matter the experience? And finally, if you had a team of like 5 people including yourself how big an improvement in production rate would you expect and would you just make bigger games according to that?
Sorry, this was just too interesting for me to wait for another post xD

    1. I won't be working with other people on this game. I won't be forming a team until I finish a few more alone.

I will put up contact info here, and I will go to pixel art forums and put up paid help wanted ads with project and payment info. I will make judgements based on portfolios and past work, as well as my impression of them in general (hard working, lazy, etc). Artists will be up for consideration regardless of experience, it will depend more on skill.

Games will be produced faster. Ideally it would be like there were 5 of me doing my jobs at once, rather than just one of me doing everything one after the other. Initially I'll be making games in less time, but with higher quality than what I've done, but depending on how it works out I'll work on longer term projects.

  4. Are you sure you can spend that much money on a download server? Maybe you should've simply moved to Mega (as far as I know they don't have problems with adult content uploaded), that way you wouldn't have to worry about extra expenses

    1. Well, look at it this way. In total, Kurovadis made over $30,000 in a year. The total cost using paid hosting would only have been about $147, taking everything into account.

being transferred to another site makes things more complicated for the customer. I'd much rather pay the money and make things smoother for people, and have the confidence that someone can't just come along and claim copyright infringement on something I made. Getting everything taken down.

    2. Somebody DMCA'd your stuff? That's actually a crime. Report it to the authorities.

Oh, and what version of gamemaker do you use? 7? Studio?

  5. Yo! Something totally off-topic here... I was just wondering... is there a way for me to get my hands on the Kurovadis OST? Because I'd love to just listen to it without being in-game or Youtubing. I'd have contacted you another way - if I knew one, so I'm typing it in here... Also: Sorry for bothering you with this.

  6. Try CherryShare, the owner David Trapp usually doesn't mind hosting projects like these.
(He's hosted a few of my older projects, so... maybe ask him?)

    1. Well, it would have been cool if somebody had actually asked me. Anonymous, I don't know who you are (but I assume somebody of the German RPG Maker community), and I am not sure which projects you are talking about.

@kyieru: But since it looks like Mediafire keeps deleting your files, I don't like the thought of having those files hosted on my server either. So if you put those unlock.dll files there, I don't mind, but if you start hosting porn over there, I am probably going to delete it sooner or later, especially if it's causing a lot of traffic.

So I am offering you a refund of your money so that your $6 aren't lost... please tell me what you think.

      Best wishes,
      David Trapp

    2. Sure, a refund would be fine. I just uploaded the unlock file to test it, I won't actually be using it. Sorry for the trouble.

    3. Refunded. As said, I don't mind files like the one you uploaded (and I also won't delete them), just don't upload the actual games there. I am sorry but at the moment I am also unable to recommend you another hoster which would fit your requirements...

  7. Have you thought about using torrents?

It's what I generally use and since it's your own content, you wouldn't have to worry about copyright. And if for some reason, you are uncomfortable with using torrents, I'd be more then happy to do it on your behalf and supply you with a link to distribute on your blog.

    Just a thought.

    1. Ideally downloading files should be as simple as possible. Torrents require that you already have a program installed, so at least for me, it's out of the question for something like demos.

      Delete
  8. I suppose that's true, but nowadays I think everybody has at least one program that can handle torrent files. In fact, I think a lot of download managers support them now.

Regardless, my offer still stands. I'd be willing to distribute by torrent for you as a mirror.

You might also try both Mega and Putlocker as potential file hosts. Neither of them have wait periods.

    1. The issue with Mega is that it has to load everytime (flash?), and doesn't seem to work with all browsers. Putlocker doesn't allow adult content.

    2. Maybe, but Mega worth it a lot. It's so fucking fast that I can't do anything but love it.

  9. Check into using Google Storage or Dropbox.
Google gives you 5 GB of free storage with your email account. Not sure how safe the contents are.
Dropbox gives you 2.25 GB of free storage, and you can purchase more. Contents are absolutely secure. All you need to link to is a download link to the shared folder in each case.

    1. Dont know about google, but dropbox doesn't have enough bandwidth to support the number of downloads.

      Delete
  10. Well...I'm not sure what to tell you. Most file hosts don't allow adult content. Putlocker says that, but I think that might be them covering their ass for their video streaming services.

  11. You can probably use zippyshare as a potential file host for your content.

  12. I downloaded some files of Mega.co.nz, the successor to Megaupload, and so far it's fantastic. Not only are the download speeds great and it offers infinite parallel downloads for free, but it has a firm hands-off policy, not being responsible for any content uploaded to the site due to its user-side encryption protocols, so I highly doubt they'll give a shit about you uploading porn. You get 50 gigs of upload space for free, and I believe you get infinite downloads, though I don't know for certain.

    1. Mega doesn't work with all web browsers, you can't direct link, and it has to load before you can use it.

As for pornographic content, I agree that they probably don't take issue with it,

      Delete
    2. You can't direct link? I downloaded an h game off someone using mega through some direct url's. Yeah it loads the files in the browser first but as soon as it's loaded, you can put it right on your computer instantly. I don't see that being any different than hitting a download button and waiting for it to download through your browser's download manager, but I don't know everything about it so I may be missing something about it.

    3. Mega = You click on my download link, it loads Mega, you're brought to Mega's download screen, and then you download it there.

Direct = You click on my link, and it downloads without taking you to another site.

    4. Well you can't beat direct downloads I guess. Can't wait to throw money at you for this game.

    2. They usually don't care though. What seems to be happening with your case is that you have trolls running around and just flagging your files as pornographic.

Have you tried using MirrorCreator? You just have to upload once and it does it across multiple file-hosting services for you.

  17. You can't upload porn on Mediafire? Mind = Blown. Guess I got lucky when I inadvertently referenced an account full of Osanagocoronokimini in a support ticket and didn't get deleted.

But I digress. Off the top of my head, Bayfiles.com allows hosting of anything that isn't illegal (http://bayfiles.com/tos).

  20. While you're at it, you may want to get a full hosting service; then, you can create your own website and post legal warnings directly on your download page.

It would also offer more customization to what you could do; you might consider posting fan artwork and such on a page. I've seen a few good ones.
