Creating a forum

Today I got an email that essentially said, "you should start a forum".

So, I guess I will. I had thought of doing it before, but I guess it takes the extreme scenario of someone making a casual suggestion for me to actually go through with something. Makes sense.

Forum Suggestions

Anyhow, here's what I need from you. Suggestions. What would you like to see on the forum? My first thought is that it would revolve primarily around H-Game development. Since I'll be releasing some templates and tutorials for making H games, I imagine I'll be getting a lot of questions about using them, and I like the idea of a forum where individuals can get feedback on their work and start projects with other members.

Edit: Based on your feedback, I don't think I'll include a general H-game subcategory, and I think I'll collapse pixel art, art, and sound/music into one board for posting your work for feedback.

  1. I'm all for the forum!
Maybe a flood topic could make the users more friendfull...

  2. If you're going to make a forum I'd say keep it relevant to your games. I feel that it's unnecessary to have all the extra fluff such as general discussion because there's plenty of forums out there that already cover this, but these kind sites are more focused on a certain group and cover various things to begin with.

Really the bottom line is I think the idea of forums as a whole is unnecessary in your case. I mean no offence, but I don't think you're popular enough to warrant a forum unless you don't mind seeing sparse topics and little activity. Personally, that's just what I think it'll end up being, but I could be wrong.

However, on the plus side at least everything would be organized compared to this... blog.

  3. I would Agree with Anonymous make this forum about your Games Kyrieru, I would also do the User Development segment for anyone who's making games like your games, and the tutorials section sounds interesting too. But the General H-Game Discussion can be done on places like Hongfire and ULMF. No point in cluttering it up on your forum as well.

  4. I think a forum is a good idea. Tutorial, Music and Art are great points! I'm supporting this

  5. Sounds great.

I agree with the other commenters though that maybe you shouldn't include an h-game subforum. I find H-games forums tend to degenerate into people endlessly requesting links to pirated games which would be a headache if you intend to moderate that sort of thing.

If you're going to do something like this anyways I think a general video game forum would be better than a strictly H-game one. I usually don't have much to say about H-games but video games in general are a different story, and I do think it's relevant to what you do since I respect you as a game designer above all else.

  6. I would love this a lot. :3

And yeah, try not to have too many forum categories. I think those categories you listed would be good enough without the sub-categories.

  7. i think you should forgo the forum idea, most of the time your blog hits get 45 people commenting and this is probably the same 30 people that respond to your posts so you'd just be making a place for the same 30 people to say the same things in a slightly different area, but im not going to stop you if you want to do it.

Personally i'd prefer for you to spend time on the game and the free template, but if you make them i will probably use them

  8. All threads are posted in the same place ie. one forum, no sub-forums. Advantages:

Everyone in the same place, no division. Everyone sees everything. Ideal for a small forum. Also, you don't know what people will be discussing on the forum yet (other than you games), so division at this stage is guesswork and you're unlikely to guess the most effective solution. People might prefer to talk about other games on other sites, they might have preferred communities and won't be so interested in talking about other stuff here, or on the other hand the forum might blossom and a community of people who want to talk about all manner of things will develop. But my way lets you gather that data before you make decisions and divisions.

Instead of comments, have a thread for each post on your blog. This has a few advantages over all discussion happening in comments sections:

Topics stay on front page as long as they are interesting/relevant ie as long as they are being discussed. Old topics are bumped when they are posted in again, so people are more likely to find an old thread than an old blog post which might be ignored. This keeps the flow of conversation fresh and organised rather than focused on the most recent blog post. It is also easy to see when something new has been posted and where, and what topics are popular. If you do have something you consider important, you can always sticky it.

This is assuming you want to keep the blog and add a forum for community discussion, rather than replace the blog with a forum in which case disregard the above.

  9. I would love any of the two first ideas, however i guess more people will prefer a hentai games forum, though there are already many of them. A dev forum would be a really creative idea and it would help users in the community learn how to make art and games, so I really like that motion

  10. Remove HGame discussion.
Combine Tutorials and Templates; disallow users new topic creation.
    Add Coding forum.

    Love the idea!

  11. Not to sound like a wet rag (k, that didn't sound right.. but whatever), not saying that I'm against it. But are you sure you want to take on the extra work?

guess for a small forum it wouldn't be so bad... Thought about doing a forum myself but lost interest when I realized that it may be more work than I want to do.

Anyway if you do start one, I think you should just keep it very simple at first, with just one category like the above anon said. If a lot of people start discussing a particular game then you can make a sub forum when the time is right.

  12. I don't really think you need a forum. I'll keep following up on here for sure though. Good luck.

  13. Well, the other topics that stand out to me that you could use would be fanworks (fanfics, fanart, ect.) and a general discussion area for off topic conversations.

  14. Not a bad idea, but like someone mentioned it may just be extra work on your plate; especially the templates and tutorials sections. However, if you can get a few simple ones that'll get new developers on their feet, great.

I primarily see the forums being used as a discussion for developing games and discussions for your own games.

  15. Be a nice place to round up English devs, and find all their respective blogs. Far as. I can tell they all seem to follow you. It's work for you though. Maybe find someone willing to work as a slavemin to keep it in check for you? Otherwise you loose dev time :P.

  16. hmm. i think it's nice to start with three main categories first: general h-game discussions, feedback & suggestions and an off-topic section where people can derp around with random discussions

    my two cents

  17. Like others have said, I think one thing to watch out for is overlapping with other forums. Aim for bringing something new into focus, but avoid doing something that's already being done. Otherwise, you could end up with a very unpleasant situation.

  19. A forum is hard work and, you have need a team to lead and manage. You are alone in your games it's a bad idea.

  20. Hmm, A regular, small forum would be nice, Maby 3 or so categories as to forum posts, Like Kyrieru Stuff, Usser created content (art, games, music, whatever) and an off topic area. But i seem to see most forums thrive around some sort of a shout box, you know just something for casual discussion for stuff not large, or important enough to actually be worth a thread.

  21. I think the Legend of Krystal forum would be a pretty good reference to use for yours.

  22. Kyrieru, I think you are an amazing designer, going far beyond the H scene.
So I think it would be interesting to do a broader forum for sprite creation and game development.

You could sub-divide it into three areas.
News, Neutral Games and Hentai Games.

  23. Good idea, I always love your sprite, and by adding a place where we can discuss art stuff is really nice.

  24. Perhaps talk to ULMF and have a subforum created there? Then you could have different threads for each topic you wish to talk about.
