With manga styles it's difficult to find the right balance sometimes. It's not that the girls I draw look all that masculine, but the fact that guys in manga can look very feminine. It kind of messes with your perception. Though, a female voice actor and breasts tends to clear up that misunderstanding pretty quick. -__-
Personally, I'd rather see a clear gender when it can be helped. But the vagueness doesn't really take away much as it's cleared up pretty quickly anyway.
I'm also starting to think Kyrieru has a think for short hair.
Can I give you some drawing advice? Though you're free to take it or not since I'm just an anon and such.
But when you draw with the head facing slightly to the side, try not to always angle the eyes like that. The way the head is tilted and the nose and mouth are placed is fine but drawing the eyes like that makes it look more like one eye is higher than the other when you really don't have to go through lengths when it comes to eyes.
Making one eye flatter than the other would do fine but no real worries. Sorry for sounding harsh.
Also, is there any chance you could show a step by step on how you draw a character's face? I'm interested in your take on the process...
Well, that picture wasn't really meant to be clean, and the coloring was just there to show the color scheme. The head looked fine, and perhaps even a bit more cohesive than what I've been doing lately, since I've been out of practice.
At the very least, though, I can safely say I've improved at anatomy a lot since then. The one in the bottom right is just....yup...
I like girls with short hair. I also like small breasts but than again some people would bitch about the unclear gender. But I think that doesn't matter at all. I want to play a cute character, not an 100% girly female. Well, maybe that's because I've a trap AND tomboyish girl fetish, uhh....
What I want to say is, that you should care more for the cutieness factor than for the clear gender factor. And I love your sketches, so you shouldn't care for it at all :D
A clear gender? But they're always cutest when you can't tell!

DeleteI second that notion. Being unable to easily tell the gender is something that I generally consider quite positive.
DeleteBreasts should fix it, yeah. xD

Pretty!
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's better when the gender confuse people, so boys and girls can find it pretty, and so you have in theory a bigger public

Actually, it doesn't have anything to do with the way it's facing to the side.To explain the shape..

The picture you see is the angle in the bottom right.
You get better everyday. I wonder if you could ever make a game like Vitamin Quest. That would be interesting.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of Tidus (FFX). Not in a bad way, he was one of the most girly Final Fantasy protagonists.
ReplyDeleteAlso, that's really good quality. Compare: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ngxkWV_UQkY/T5IlTVI9pzI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/kCF1jpY6TA8/s1600/design.png

I still don't see an ahegao.
ReplyDeleteI'll get to that, don't worry lol.
DeleteI don't see why people are having a hard time with gender. Big shiny eyes and higher cheek bones usually means it's a lady.
ReplyDeleteSecret spoiler: The new game's main character is Eroico after being turned female by the Genie :v
ReplyDeleteLove the gender ambiguous main characters. So long as they've got a feminine voice and no ambiguity without pants.
