Still working.

Also, for those of you who are wondering,

I'm still working, still sorry it's taking so long. Work has been a little stressful lately, mostly because of my own shortcomings. Hopefully as I get a few more games under my belt, I'll be able to deal with them a little better and not be such an idiot -__-.

After I finish Noaika, I'll be starting that template I always talk about. After the template is finished, what I may try and do is create a game from start to finish, and stream the whole process. Perhaps that will help get me work consistently, and apply a little more pressure to keep things rolling.

I think it would also be kind of neat to do some strawpolls during the streams, to decide on certain factors. Starting from the beginning, including a lot of the gameplay elements, and character creation.

  1. Which part of creating the game does consume the most of your time?

    1. Hmm...hard to say. probably fixing bugs, testing, and periods when I'm indecisive about something (since it slows everything down.).
The thing is, I may spend like 4 hours on a run cycle, but I only need to do it once. On the other hand, play-testing is always a factor, and adding any element leads to testing. It doesn't help that GM needs to re-load texture pages when you alter graphics.

    2. If you are interest you could stream while you work? In my part i would be highly interested.

  2. While I like the idea of fans having their say on the content you can create, I love to see the creators' imagination at work the most. I hope you'll take everything into moderation within your ideas and goals as they have been pretty damn good so far and I'd hate to see things take a turn for the worst. I never liked polls :x

    Anyway, early Merry Christmas~

    1. Well, as an example, if I asked "should the sub-weapons that the player finds be technology, magic, or martial arts?", what to do with the answer still comes down to me, and I would only be presenting options that I can visualize in my head anyway

Of course, there would probably be some situations where discussion turns into choices that get get added to the polls, but again, only if I could see them working myself.

    2. For example, a bunch of people saying "do a dildo sword!" aren't really going to sway my opinion much -__-

    3. I guess I have to speak for all a constructive suggestion. Do a dildo weapon.

    4. I think it's better you pick those genres or the setting and style will become a mess. Imagine if the dude in Eroico ran around armed with a lightsaber and a rocket launcher while the witches and fairies fought back using kung fu. Decide if it's tech, magic, or martial arts yourself and have polls on the visuals.

Like if the tech weapon is plain, covered in tron lines, or the business end is made of lasers. If the fantasy weapon is covered in runes, looks ancient and worn, or has elemental effects. If the martial arts are oldschool plain, have fancy swoosh effects, or an epic roaring lion made of fire superimposed over a punch so it looks badass.

    5. What if you taught us how to make mod patches for the game so the fans can create their own weapons and apply copyrighted material that you're not allowed to? Imagine the possibilities. We could create a dildo sword where every swing generates an afterimage of Optimus Prime punching and voice clips of him shouting "ROLL OUT!" "TRANSFORM!" "MEGATROOON!!"

    6. The thing is, the poll would only consist of things that I could see working together. For example, if martial arts were chosen, then the rest of the game would be created based on that fact.

However, even if there were a mix of magic and sci-fi, it would be up to me to create a world where both could co-exist. Are futuristic weapons artifacts of the past that people don't understand? Is there a futuristic society far above the clouds, and a primitive society below? Has a primitive society created powerful technology because they have magic? Plenty of ways to do it.

    7. In my experience, letting people vote on mutually exclusive options is a recipe for disaster, but polling to determine preferences can be beneficial.

In the first case, people who vote for the losing options often get bent out of shape. Even worse, if you have lots of options, the losers will probably make up a majority of voters. You'll make a few people happy and a lot of people unhappy. It's human psychology to get invested in your vote and feel bad if you lose and good if you win. A simple preference poll, on the other hand, doesn't have the same psychological force behind it, especially if people can vote for multiple options.

For example, bad idea for a poll: choose whether the next game will be fantasy or sci-fi.
Good idea: here are 10 boss ideas for the next game, choose which ones you think sound good.

  4. If you stream it, please save it. I'll try to be there for 'em live, but I'd also like to be able to go back and watch them for fun and learning.
And yes the template, I love the idea of it. If I can ever get my hands on a cintiq, I will make good things flow.

  7. Quick question: Is there any reason why you haven't made your sprites/tilesheets publicly available? You are very good at pixel art animation and I kind of want to see how you do it. This is something that's been itching at me for a while now.

    1. I mean, between my work and some of the stuff on say, Pixel Joint, my animations aren't really that amazing. I just feel like there are plenty of other places to look to for reference,

  8. If you decide to show others how you work, more people will make more games, which is good. And i won't have to wait around for you all the time. Share the knowledge.

  9. I feel like streaming is going to encourage people (including you) to think of your game as a group effort, and cause you to spend too much time convincing people or debating people

    1. Mmm...I don't think so. Like I said, choices would only be between things I could see working. And when it comes to normal interaction with viewers, it's not as though I'd be asking for input or on everything. The stream would more or less be me working, and talking about my thought process. active feedback would probably be sought after in the form of "which looks better, this or that?" questions, which are opinions I would usually just look to friends for anyway.

Plus, the benefit of actually speaking would be that I could talk, and keep it quick. As opposed to typing, where it'd be impossible to work AND interact with people.

Glad I found your this year. Your games have taken me through some tough times.

Also, I plan on joining the H-game dev community eventually. Or at least help out as an artist for one.

Hope you stay healthy and work hard again this year!
